MPS, SNIPERS AND CRIME by David S. Pointer
David S. Pointer pulls no punches in this collection of poems published by White Knights Press. MPS, SNIPERS AND CRIME speaks of the less pleasant realities of life, the nitty gritty and the dark shockwaves that roll in are all portrayed in these poems. David S. Pointer served in the Marine military police and is the son of a piano playing bank robber. These poems paint his life in shadows brought to light. Below, a couple of poems to wrap your head around:
Oncoming Crime Facts
I knew about my
deceased father’s
easy find fortunes
from Missouri banks, but
that dash under a table
retrieving my superball
overhearing grandpa-
the first he’d ever
uttered on about any
murder-suddenly, I
could see a victim
being eaten out of
his hunting pants by
forest predators: my
dad now six years
dead had those deeds
shining back from
the grave like
sharkskin.
This poem seems an easy read and as it sinks in, takes on that dark sheen like the sharkskin noted at the end. To be the son of such a man must leave one’s head reeling and sometimes the only way to deal with the complexities is to place it in simple black and white terms.
Traffic Call-In
(MCLB, Albany, GA 1980)
My military polic
supervisor pulled
my new girlfriend
over for imaginary
speeding. He wanted
sex and got a “Sir
no thanks” from the
driver’s side window.
My supervisor, Sgt.
Jerrold’s radioed a
patrol unit to trade
places with me on
my duty gate. I was
ordered to Sgt. Jerrold’s
location where I was
ordered to write my
own girlfriend a traffic
ticket without ever
seeing her “speed” or
operate a moving
vehicle. I politely
refused not yet
knowing the full
details feeling the
sabotage from the
senior supervisor,
feeling a seismic
shift in my future
tactical thinking,
feeling the loss
when my girlfriend
later told me she
didn’t feel “safe
driving on base to
see me anymore.”
This scenario is an absolute nightmare and again the complexities of the situation are left in the simple black and white terms with no fanciful words or extra back-story. Stark and upsetting, the poet and his new relationship is tested in terms that could never be foreseen. I wonder now what happened to the pair.
If you enjoyed this sample you may purchase a copy of MPS, SNIPERS AND CRIME from White Knights Press for $7.00 at:

Agapornis Swinderniana by Paula Cary with Give-Away
Today I’m posting about my first chapbook collection of poems! This won’t be a review: I just wanted to celebrate my first collection with a give-away!
Kristy Bowen at Dancing Girl Press did a fantastic job and I was thrilled when I received my chapbooks in the mail. Agapornis Swinderniana is a collection of love poems by yours truly and I hope you’ll enjoy them. I’ll feature a sample poem below. I’d also like to thank Henry Denander who did the cover art, two love birds on a branch, as it is beautiful and simple all at once. You can see the cover when you click on the link below to purchase or take a peek at my chapbook which has an additional sample poem.
The Forbidden Breakfast
Sweet tangy chocolate covered cheesecake
Softened onto our tongues
Drizzled with earthy-rich coffee
Sipped from our oversize red mugs
As morning sun spills
Onto the table, halo-ing
Our breakfast like an angel’s choir
We revel in adulthood
Our mothers told us no ice cream for breakfast
And now we feast on such treats
We lift them up into the sunlight
Turning them sideways towards our mouths
Our smiles sticky sweet
We’re happy and giddy
Like the five year olds
Our inner children are.
If you enjoyed this sample poem and would like a copy you have a chance to score a free copy by leaving a simple “I want to win” comment in the comments section or sending an e-mail titled “I want to win” with your name in the body of the e-mail to poethoundblogspotATyahooDOTcom. The drawing will be March 11th and announced that very day which is a Sunday!
Or you can purchase a copy for yourself by going to Dancing Girl Press and pick up a copy of Agapornis Swinderniana by yours truly, Paula Cary, for $7.00 at:

Chicken Pinata Open Submissions
I have copy-and-pasted the guidelines below and have provided a link so you can explore their journal:
Chickenpinata wants your poetry!
Please send a submission of up to four unpublished poems as a single .rtf or .doc file to
submissions@chickenpinata.com. The subject line for your e-mail should be
"submission--your name." Please put at least your name and e-mail on each page that you
submit.
Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please let us know immediately if your work is taken
elsewhere! Please also do not submit another batch of poems until you have heard a
response from us.
Please also include a .jpg of you, if you have one, and a third-person bio of up to 100
words in the body of your e-mail. You can include previous publication credits, if you have
any, but we'd be just as happy if you told us something interesting about your life or your
philosophy of writing.
We do prefer that your bio wasn't overly self-aggrandizing or dull, but we don't mind if you
demonstrate a bit of your personality. And if you have a website you'd like us to link to,
we're happy to do it.
Generally, we appreciate shorter pieces, but if you wow us with a longer poem (say, up to
two pages), we won't turn you away. We like to read accessible poetry that's fresh, new,
and fun.
Of course we love lush language and metaphor, but please, skip heavy allusions and other
overly "poetical" styling. That stuff makes our head hurt. Individual rights return to the
poet upon publication, but we ask that you allow us to keep your poem in perpetuity in
our archived issues.
We also ask that you credit Chickenpinata, a journal of poetry, when you republish your
poem in your first (or next!) book.
For all issues, please expect a response within 4 months. For regular correspondence,
we'll try to answer daily-ish, but definitely within a week. If for some crazy reason, you
haven't heard from us in 4 months about your submission, please feel free to send us a
query. Sometimes e-mails get buried and sticky-notes go awry. We don't want you to wait
indefinitely wondering if we even received your work. We've had that happen to us, and
it's both disheartening and aggravating.
And, as always, thank you for your interest.
~~Eds.
