Enjoyed the interview. As always struck by just how often Poe, Dickinson and Whitman crop up in people's lists of influences whereas I'd never heard of any of them until I'd left school.

That doesn't make much sense to me, Jim, because these are poets who are usually pounded into you in school, at least in this country.

@Mather - I'm from Scotland. The fact is that apart from Robert Burns and a little Robert Louis Stevenson - I never read anything other than English poets until I was seventeen.

Yes, in school those particular poets are pounded into our American brains but luckily I enjoyed learning about them.
Jim, I'd love to learn more about Scotland's poets and your own list, who do you read and enjoy?
